5 Surprising Benefits of Seeing a Chiropractor During Pregnancy

Seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy is a must for pregnant moms! It’s a safe and non-invasive holistic treatment that studies have shown it to be effective and beneficial. The benefits of chiropractic care extend far beyond pregnancy into birth and postpartum.

I can personally attest to its benefits as it has done amazing things to my body.

I no longer suffer from pregnancy-induced symphysis pubis dysfunction, back spasms, and sciatica. For some, these symptoms may go away immediately after the baby is born. But for many others like myself, chiropractic care is needed to help the body heal.

Pregnancy is meant to be enjoyed, and you don’t have to suffer silently.

1) Chiropractic Care Helps With Pregnancy Aches and Pains

Did you know that 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy and 50% to 75% of women experience back pain during labor?

Yet only 21% of pregnant women with back pain seek help from their prenatal care providers.

As you can see, back pain is very common in childbearing women.

Your doctor may have already told you that it’s normal to experience various aches and pains throughout your body during pregnancy.

What you may not have been told, is that there is a way for you to get some relief. Not in the form of temporary pain-relieving pills, but in the form of chiropractic care.

Commonly prescribed painkillers may provide you with temporary relief, but they aren’t meant to heal the body. The best part about chiropractic care is that it focuses on identifying the root cause of the pain and addressing it.

The results of a study indicated that 75% of pregnant patients who received chiropractic care during their pregnancies stated that they found relief from pain.

Lingering pain can have a very negative effect not only on your pregnancy but on your experience during labor.

2) Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Encourages Optimal Fetal Positioning

The Webster Technique of chiropractic care helps improve pelvic and spinal alignment. This reduces uterine torsion, aka twisting, and essentially makes more room for the baby in the womb.

According to this study, the Webster Technique has a success rate of 82%. It also promotes optimal fetal positioning and can result in an easier and quicker labor.

This technique will not get your baby to turn immediately, like an external cephalic version (ECV) might. However, the positive physiological effect it has on the body encourages the baby to get in the perfect position for birth! This lowers the risk of the cascade of interventions that can lead to a c-section.

It is a gentle, non-invasive technique that is nearly risk-free compared to the turning method known as ECV, which includes risks such as placental tearing and preterm labor.

3) Prenatal Chiropractic Care Reduces the Risk of Back Labor

The authors of a survey found that chiropractic adjustments may significantly lower the chances of a pregnant woman suffering through the pain of back labor.

According to this study, you are three times more likely to experience back labor if you have back pain during pregnancy.

4) Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Supports Postpartum Recovery

The benefits of a chiropractor also include a quicker postpartum recovery. Your pelvis and spine go through major changes both during pregnancy and postpartum days.

Many women accept this pain as “normal,” but the truth is that a healthy body shouldn’t be in pain.

Dysfunctions in the spine can manifest in other ways throughout your body. Chiropractic care addresses the root cause of any issues. It aims to treat to heal from the inside out by improving bodily functions, allowing your body to function and support itself better.

Immune system support is important, especially during pregnancy when you may be more prone to illness. Chiropractic adjustments are especially beneficial for expecting moms.

A groundbreaking 3-year study conducted by Dr. Ronald Pero1 revealed that chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care and 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer and other serious diseases.

    I didn’t know it could be good to see a chiropractor when you are pregnant. That said, it’s good to know that it can actually help lower risk of back labor. This seems like it could be important especially if you know women in your family that went through it.

    YESSSS! I started seeing mine when I was 12 weeks and it’s been a life savor! I struggled with daily headaches for years and then being pregnant I couldn’t take the meds or use the rubs that I used to manage it in the past. I don’t know what I’d do without my chiro!
