10 Ways to Finally Sleep Better During Pregnancy (Even in the Third Trimester)

What pregnant mama doesn’t want better sleep during pregnancy? The thing is, getting any sleep during pregnancy can be a little tricky. Getting good sleep for some can even seem like a foreign concept!

Between legs cramps that somehow only creep up at night, and pregnancy insomnia, getting good sleep during pregnancy may seem like a thing of the past but keep calm. Some proven things can help you fall and stay asleep at night. So, here are 10 genius ways to get better sleep during pregnancy!

1) Get a pregnancy pillow for good sleep during pregnancy

If you’re currently preggers and do not own a pregnancy pillow, stop reading this and get yourself one right now.

I don’t know how I would’ve ever been comfortable getting good sleep during pregnancy had I not had one.

I’m a side sleeper, so I propped my belly over my pregnancy pillow and wrapped one leg around it.

My husband was grateful he no longer had to be pinned down by my leg in the same position all night, and I could sleep super comfortably whichever way I wanted with my beloved pregnancy pillow!

2) Book that chiropractic appointment

There are so many benefits to getting chiropractic treatments during pregnancy. I loved going to see mine every month!

From alleviating sciatica and postpartum girdle pain symptoms to helping you achieve an easier vaginal birth, chiropractic adjustments are a must for pregnant moms.

Regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy can also help you get better sleep at night.

Correcting spinal misalignments improves your body’s overall health, reducing stress and increasing your state of relaxation.

All of these contribute to getting good sleep during pregnancy.

3) Use magnesium

From alleviating nausea symptoms to helping reduce the risk of pre-term labor, there are several benefits to taking a magnesium supplement during pregnancy.

It is commonly used during pregnancy to help moms suffering from insomnia.

If you are having trouble falling asleep, you may want to speak to your HCP about using a magnesium supplement like this magnesium oil.

4) Take a calming bath

A good bath is always relaxing. Dim the lights and put on some soothing music.

Throw in some Epsom salt for the ultimate relaxing and gently detoxing bath.

This is a great way to de-stress and just be still and in the moment.

Taking baths before bed after a busy day will help ease common pregnancy body aches and also help relax your body.

Caution: Be careful getting out of the tub, since your bubble bath can make the tub slippier. Call out for help if you need it

5) Exercise during the day

There are so many benefits to working out during pregnancy. Not only is this great for preparing your body for childbirth, it can also help boost your immune system and help relieve constipation during pregnancy!

It’s best to work out earlier during the day so you can have a more productive day that will contribute to better sleep at night.

6) Put your phone down

Blue light will keep you awake and disrupt your body’s release of melatonin. This will have you feeling sleep deprived and poorly rested in the morning. I know it can be super tempting to scroll through social media late at night but to ensure you get good sleep during pregnancy, put that phone down!

Another thing you can do is use blue-light-blocking glasses when you use screens after 7pm.

7) Practice relaxation

I value my alone time a lot more now that I’m a wife and a mom of 2 littles. At night if my husband isn’t home and the kids are asleep, I take a long shower.

Then when I’m dressed for bed, I dim the lights and turn off my phone and TV. I find a comfy spot to sit down, close my eyes, and then I start doing some deep breathing.

This helps me relax a whole lot which is important for me as my days are usually super busy.

I love doing this because I get enjoy the quietness and stillness of the atmosphere in my house, and I get to just not do anything but be in the moment.

This is a very powerful and pleasant way to relax so you get good sleep at night. Try it out!

8) Don’t drink water too close to bedtime

It’s a known fact that you pee more frequently during pregnancy.

A great way to not have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night is to avoid drinking too close to bedtime.

I will admit that this can be difficult, especially when you’re drinking tons of water during pregnancy.

I always had my gigantic water bottle with me because I was always thirsty!

Taking very very small sips of water when I started to feel thirsty in the evenings prevented me from binge drinking water right before bed.

It helped me sleep better because I didn’t have to go to the bathroom 2394 times.

9) Avoid taking too many naps

This one pretty much speaks for itself. Sleeping too much throughout they day will have you feeling more energized later in the day.

Taking an evening nap may actually keep you up at night!

Avoid taking longer naps, settle for cat naps earlier in the day if you have to, so you can get better sleep at night.

10) Create your own sleep sanctuary

This could mean cleaning up your room and getting rid of clutter, getting new bed sheets, or simply making the bed more often.

I’m certainly not suggesting breaking the bank, but even with a few simple changes you can transform a cluttered, stuffy, and uncomfortable room into a sleep sanctuary.

Thankfully I didn’t have much trouble sleeping when I was pregnant. My biggest issue was having to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and no matter how early I stopped drinking, I still ended up in the middle of the night at least once.
