Let’s talk about something that rarely gets the spotlight when you’re baby prepping: your postpartum bathroom basket. And really, your postpartum recovery as a whole.
If you’re in nesting mode and preparing for your baby’s arrival, don’t forget to prep a little something for you. A well-stocked postpartum bathroom basket is one of those simple things that can make a world of difference during your recovery. And when you’re healing from birth while caring for a newborn, your comfort will go a long way.
I put together this list of postpartum bathroom basket essentials to help you feel a little more prepared, a little more taken care of, and a whole lot more empowered in those tender early days. ❤️
What Is a Postpartum Bathroom Basket?
It’s a small bin or basket you keep in your bathroom (preferably close to the toilet) that contains all the must-haves for your recovery. You’ll be reaching for these items daily (often multiple times a day), so having them close by and organized is such a game-changer.
Whether you’re healing from tearing, stitches, swelling, or just managing the whirlwind of postpartum hormones, this little basket becomes your personal care kit. And the nice thing is that all of your essentials are already in one place.
All-Natural Postpartum Bathroom Basket Essentials
Here’s what I personally recommend every mama have on hand; these items are crunchy mom–approved, non-toxic, and gentle for healing. For a complete list of healing essentials (and not just what you should keep in your bathroom), be sure to also check out my all-natural postpartum recovery essentials list.
1. A bathroom basket
You don’t *have* to get a fancy bathroom basket to hold your postpartum recovery products, but it’s nice to have something pretty to contain and organize your postpartum essentials. Cloud Island makes a really pretty cotton rope diaper caddy that doubles as a postpartum bathroom basket.
2. Peri bottle
You’ll want to avoid wiping for a while, and a peri bottle is the best way to stay clean after using the bathroom. Look for one with an angled nozzle for easier use. Frida Mom’s version is popular and I like that it works well at any angle, even upside down.
3. Postpartum pads
In the early days, you’ll bleed more than a heavy period. Choose large, extra long overnight-style pads made with organic cotton—no fragrances, dyes, or plastic-y layers. Some mamas also love reusable cloth postpartum pads once the flow slows down.
I personally like the Rael Extra Long Overnight Pads for postpartum, but you could also go with a thicker option like the Frida Postpartum Pads.
4. Witch hazel pads or wipes
Witch hazel is soothing, healing, and naturally anti-inflammatory. You can make your own pads by soaking organic cotton rounds in alcohol-free witch hazel, or use a gentle witch hazel pad insert or wipe after each bathroom trip. The only prepackaged wipes I’ve found contain alcohol, which is typically something you want to avoid right after giving birth.
5. Herbal peri spray or sitz bath herbs
Healing herbs like calendula, comfrey, yarrow, and lavender can do wonders for your perineum. Keep a postpartum herbal spray in your basket for a quick refresh—or if you have time, take a sitz bath once a day using an herbal blend (Earth Mama and Motherlove make great options).

6. Perineal balm
A soothing perineal balm can help ease stinging and irritation. Look for organic products with ingredients like aloe vera, calendula, and coconut oil. Avoid anything with synthetic fragrance or harsh preservatives.
7. Postpartum underwear or adult diapers
Let’s be honest: mesh underwear is lifesaving in the first few days. Some mamas prefer adult diapers but I always used the mesh underwear. Both options will work — just keep a few clean pairs in your basket so you’re never caught off guard.
8. Nursing pads
I like to keep these anywhere and everywhere, including my postpartum recovery basket. Keep a stash of your nursing pads handy and change them when you use the restroom, if needed. You can use disposable nursing pads (or these), or washable organic pads.
9. Lotions
Consider adding anything else that you might want to use regularly, such as a magnesium lotion or other tinctures and products that support your healing or wellness.
10. Extra toilet paper
Not all toilet paper is created equal. Choose an unbleached, fragrance-free, soft roll (like Who Gives a Crap or Reel). Stock extra nearby because you’ll go through more than usual.
11. Snacks (optional, but genius)
Some mamas like to tuck a protein bar, a few dates, or electrolyte packets into their postpartum baskets. It’s not essential, but when you’re recovering and nursing around the clock, having nourishment nearby helps. (Read this guide for tips on how to eat well after having a baby.)
What to Keep Out of Your Postpartum Basket
❌ Scented sprays
❌ Disposable pads with plastic backing or fragrance
❌ Harsh soaps or disinfectants
❌ Anything you wouldn’t want near a baby’s bum—because your body deserves that same gentleness
Plan Ahead for Postpartum
You deserve to be cared for just as much as your new baby. Something as simple as creating a postpartum bathroom basket is such a simple way to love on yourself during recovery. You don’t need everything, but even a few of these items can help you feel less scattered and more supported.
And mama, if no one has told you today: you’re doing an amazing job. Be gentle with yourself. You’ve got this. 💛
