Nesting parties are quickly growing in popularity (thanks, social media!) and are becoming one of the most meaningful ways moms are preparing for postpartum.

The truth is that in the midst of pregnancy, childbirth prep, and building your baby registry, it’s surprisingly easy to overlook one very important thing: preparing yourself for the transition into life with a newborn.

That’s why the trend of nesting parties is soooo important and welcomed. A nesting party is an intimate gathering where your closest friends or family come together to help you prepare for postpartum in ways that truly matter. It’s about setting up your home, easing your mental load, nourishing your body, and building real support before your baby arrives.

Instead of focusing on gifts or activities, a nesting party centers the mother. It creates space to get things done that will actually help later, to calm your nervous system, and to feel held as you step into this new season. You’re not hosting. You’re not performing. You’re being cared for.

It’s practical, intimate, and deeply supportive, and it sets you up for a much gentler postpartum experience. Can you already see why this is such a wonderful idea?

Below, I’ve shared a thorough list of thoughtful, practical ideas for what you can do at a nesting party. Take what resonates and leave the rest. There’s no “right” way to do this, only what feels supportive for you and the season you’re stepping into.

Remember, accepting help is not a burden. It’s a skill, and this is a beautiful time to practice it.

What Is a Nesting Party?

A nesting party is a small gathering, usually held in the third trimester, where close friends or family come together to help you prepare for postpartum.

Instead of watching you open gifts, people show up ready to help you prepare for motherhood in real, tangible ways. Think: folding baby clothes, preparing food, organizing postpartum supplies, setting up baby stations, and offering emotional support and advice.

These are the kinds of things that can feel overwhelming once you’re healing from childbirth and caring for a newborn, and they’re also the kinds of things that make a huge difference when they’re done ahead of time — and with the love and support of your friends and family.

Reasons to Have a Nesting Party

A nesting party can feel calmer, more grounding, and more meaningful than other gatherings like baby showers. Not to knock the baby shower — this is a wonderful tradition on its own (see more thoughts on this below) — but a nesting party just hits differently.

Some of the biggest benefits include reducing your postpartum mental load, creating systems before you’re exhausted, receiving practical help instead of more stuff, building emotional and logistical support ahead of time, and feeling seen and supported as a mother, not just someone preparing for a baby.

A nesting party isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the things that will matter most when your baby is here.

Should You Have a Nesting Party or a Baby Shower?

Honestly? You don’t have to choose one or the other.

Some moms have both. Some opt only for a nesting party. Others blend elements of each. The deciding factor isn’t etiquette, it’s what you need and feel is right for you.

If you’re craving hands-on help, quiet connection, and real preparation for postpartum, a nesting party can be an incredibly supportive option. You could still host a baby shower with a larger circle of friends and family, and keep your nesting party limited to your inner circle.

Who to Invite

A nesting party is typically not a big group event, and that’s intentional.

A supportive guest list might include close friends and family you feel comfortable around, other moms who understand postpartum realities, and neighbors or loved ones who have offered help (and genuinely meant it).

Six to twelve people tends to be the sweet spot. Larger gatherings can work beautifully too if they’re structured well and include people who are truly ready to roll up their sleeves and help — rather than feel catered to and entertained.

(A bit of advice: if you feel hesitant about inviting someone, trust that instinct.)

What to Do at a Nesting Party

A nesting party is still a celebration and a gathering, but it’s also a practical event where your guests actively support you as you prepare for motherhood and postpartum. Choose a few key nesting activities for guests to help with, set out any tools, ingredients, or supplies, and allow support to unfold naturally.

You’ll still take time to connect, chat, and enjoy food together, but the heart of the gathering is inviting people into the preparations that will matter most once your baby arrives.

One of the most uncomfortable parts of preparing for postpartum can be asking for help, even when people genuinely want to give it. A nesting party creates a container where support is offered naturally, without you having to repeatedly explain, direct, or delegate.

Many moms find it helpful to set up a few simple stations or loosely plan what kind of help will be offered, things like meal prep, organizing baby items, or preparing postpartum supplies. This gives guests clarity and makes it easier for support to flow without awkwardness.

Stations should feel like gentle invitations, not assignments. Two to four is usually plenty. Guests can move between activities, take breaks, or simply sit and be present. The goal is ease and support, not productivity.

If it helps, you can:

  • Write tasks on small cards and let guests choose what feels good
  • Ask a close friend or the party host to help guide people if needed
  • Casually mention a few areas where help would be most supportive
  • Allow people to opt out or switch tasks without explanation

Activities You Can Set Up

Here’s a pretty exhaustive list of nesting party activities to give you some ideas for what to do at your party. Let this list guide you toward picking a few activities for your nesting party, not limit or pressure you. You get to decide what feels helpful for you and the season you’re stepping into, so feel free to get creative!

Home and Environment Preparation

  • Wash, sort, fold, and put away baby clothes by size and season
  • Set up diaper changing stations in multiple rooms
  • Stock stations with diapers, wipes, creams, cloths, and extra onesies
  • Prepare a feeding station with water, snacks, burp cloths, and pump parts
  • Organize postpartum supplies so they’re visible and easy to grab
  • Set up a bassinet or bedside sleeper
  • Assemble nursery furniture or baby gear
  • Declutter high-traffic areas to reduce visual overwhelm
  • Reorganize the bathroom for postpartum use
  • Set up dim, warm lighting for evening and night feeds

Food and Nourishment Prep

  • Prepare freezer meals for easy reheating
  • Cook soups, stews, chili, or casseroles
  • Organize takeout menus or a list of nearby restaurants
  • Prep postpartum breakfast items like muffins, egg bites, or oatmeal packs
  • Make energy bites or protein snacks
  • Prep smoothie freezer packs
  • Make bone broth or other warming drinks
  • Organize the freezer so meals are easy to see and grab
  • Create a postpartum snack basket near the bed or couch
  • Prep herbal teas for recovery, lactation, or sleep

Postpartum Care and Recovery

  • Assemble postpartum care kits
  • Create bathroom baskets with healing essentials
  • Prepare padsicles, heating pads, or comfort tools
  • Organize nursing supplies
  • Prep pumping supplies and a storage system

Baby Care

  • Practice baby carrier setup or babywearing
  • Install or learn how to use the stroller or car seat
  • Organize baby care items by room
  • Set up a baby bath station
  • Prep the diaper bag with baby and mama essentials

Emotional and Nervous System Support

  • Share advice for postpartum and motherhood
  • Talk about what support actually looks like, without guilt
  • Create a “read when you’re overwhelmed” note pile

Postpartum Support Planning

  • Map out who can help with meals and when
  • Plan sibling support or childcare help
  • Discuss visitor boundaries and expectations
  • Create a short “how to support us” list

Community and Continuity

  • Create a group text or support thread
  • Schedule future meal drop-offs
  • Set expectations for check-ins after birth
  • Plan postpartum visits that are supportive and useful
  • Write “help coupons” for specific tasks
  • Name how long support is welcome, not just the first week

How to Set the Tone

Your nesting party should feel calm, safe, and unrushed.

A few simple ways to set the tone include keeping it short, two to three hours max, playing soft background music, lighting candles if that feels grounding to you, and allowing people to help, sit, or simply be present.

Final Thoughts

A nesting party is less about the party itself and more about how it carries you into postpartum. It honors the mother as much as the baby and creates support that lasts beyond one afternoon. If this kind of gathering resonates with you, listen to that pull. Your instincts often know what support you’ll need before your mind catches up.
