Looking for great gift ideas for 4-year olds? At this age, kids aren’t too hard to shop for because they often can tell you what kind of toys and characters they like.
Four is also a magical age when our little ones begin to play with other kids more collaboratively. They get lost in their imagination and love to play pretend—all day long.
Whether your 4-year-old is a construction worker building an entire city, or a little baker in the kitchen, you can buy their gifts based on these interests. The key is to stick to toys and activities that keep them exploring, imagining, and offer options for collaborative play.
One thing to think about is that even if your 4-year-old knows exactly what they want for their birthday or a special holiday, they won’t really know if it’s a toy they will use often. Most kids around this age love flashy toys but only play with them for a minute before they’re at the bottom of the toy bin never to see daylight again — until it’s time to do a donation. (Speaking from experience!)
So I definitely recommend using their interests as a guide for shopping when buying gifts for 4-year-olds, but to think more about longevity and function. Make sure it will last and be played with frequently.
Here are some great gift ideas for the 4-year-old on your list. I promise you’ll find something great…Happy shopping!

1. A Dollhouse
Dollhouses are so much fun for 4-year-olds. They are great for pretend role play and can be played both independently and collaboratively.
One of my favorites is this precious but simple wooden dollhouse by Hape. Hape makes great, high-quality toys and their dollhouse is no exception. Its solid wood construction ensures this will last through all the years of play.
It has 6 rooms and comes with all the furnishings. You can also get extra Hape accessories as add-on gifts in the future!
2. Marble Race Track
Kids at this age often still love to see things in motion. Cars and balls are a huge win. However, they’re often ready for things that are a bit more intricate, like a marble race track. I highly recommend one that can be changed and built by your child, as these are more open-ended than other options.
Also, just be sure that your 4-year-old can use marbles safely and supervise them while playing.
3. A Play Tent
This play tent from Lalo is such a sweet way to give your child a cozy spot to read, play, or wind down. The natural canvas and sturdy beechwood frame feel safe and simple, and it blends in beautifully with a calm, low-tox play space. It’s lightweight enough to move around the house but still feels solid once it’s set up. A great gift if you want something that sparks imagination without adding clutter or chaos to your home.
4. Play Silks
These gorgeous play silks are endlessly versatile and quietly luxurious—perfect for a non-toxic, imaginative play space. They’re dyed with non-toxic, eco-friendly dyes and safety-tested, so you can feel good about your little one wrapping up in them. Whether your child uses them as a fort roof, a superhero cape, a drifting fairy veil or a cozy blanket for a favourite doll, they encourage open-ended creativity and calm play. A gift that grows with your child and adds a gentle touch of magic to everyday moments.
5. A Geometric Board
Geometric boards are harder than they look. They require a lot of reasoning and logic, which kids at this age are just starting to develop. These puzzles are a great way to encourage those mental muscles to grow.
I like this geometric board. It comes with plenty of rubber bands and some challenge cards, which is important for children who may need some extra inspiration to get started.
6. Bounce House
A bounce house is a larger gift that most 4-year-olds will love, especially if you have a little jumping bean on your hands! If you’re looking for the gift to top all the other gifts (and the child has the room for it), then a bounce house is the way to go! The Little Tikes Jump ‘N Slide Bouncer features a 7-foot jumping arena and a slide for easy exit.
7. A Wooden Play Kitchen
If you’re looking for a piece that’s both beautiful and built to last, this play kitchen from Lalo is a winner. It’s made with sustainably sourced birch plywood and solid beech wood, finished with non-toxic, plant-and-water-based coatings so you can feel good about your little chef’s space. Assembly is seriously quick (under 5 minutes) so you’ll spend less time prepping and more time watching imaginative play. It gives your child a real-world inspired spot to stir, serve, and sweep-up. So sweet!
8. Wooden Maze
Wooden mazes are a reliable, quiet-time activity for 4-year-olds. They aren’t incredibly loud and will keep a child pretty focused for a while! They also come in an array of difficulty and styles, so you can choose one that will fit your child’s skillset the best.
I recommend this wooden labyrinth game because you can’t really “lose.” It is perfect for beginners who haven’t used these sorts of games before.
9. A Terrarium
Here is a unique gift idea for a 4-year-old!
Terrariums are an educational toy that so many kids love. Kids can learn all sorts of scientific principles like how plants grow as they put their very own miniature garden together! I personally really like the Light-Up Terrarium. It glows in the dark with a built-in LED light.
10. National Geographic Kids Subscriptions
National Geographic Kids is an excellent magazine for kids. The magazines feature fun facts, fascinating photos, and interesting articles that cover science, geography, and archeology that are all tailored to your little reader. The subscription makes a lot of sense and kids love to get a monthly magazine in the mail!
11. Magna-Tiles
If you’ve read any of my other gift guides, you’ll realize that Magna-Tiles are practically on all of my lists.
Magna-Tiles are popular magnetic blocks that are super easy and fun for kids to play with. With a variety of shapes, kids love to build all kinds of structures with these and will entertain them for hours.
Most kids will be able to play with these independently, but you do want to supervise them since they contain magnets. I recommend starting with a 100-piece set to make sure that there are enough pieces to build with.
12. KiwiCo Subscription
KiwiCo creates subscription boxes for all ages that are centered around the arts and sciences. Every other month, they send out a themed box containing a STEAM project and other activities that go with that project.
These activities are fun and can be done collaboratively or independently depending on how well the child follows directions. The price is very fair as well, making this one of the best children’s subscription boxes for the money.
13. Planetarium Projector
For children who love space, it really doesn’t get much better than this planetarium projector. It can project over 50 different images, and most 4-year-olds can use it with little assistance.
Both of my boys love our projector!
14. A Jump Rope
Most 4-year-olds aren’t going to be jumping rope very well just yet. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t start learning.
Choosing the perfect jump rope is important for this age. I recommend this one by Green Toys. It is made of recycled plastic and 100% cotton. Just be sure to supervise your little one while they play with this.
15. Matching Games
Matching memory games are just starting to be possible at this age. Many children can begin figuring out how memory games work. These are often the easiest games for younger children to play. There are many on the market, but I like this one from Chuckle and Roar because it features baby animals and isn’t character-driven.
16. A Ukulele
Musical instruments are a great buy for most 4-year-olds. Many have the fine motor skills for something like a Hape Kid’s Wooden Ukulele. This little ukulele is a great introduction for teaching kids about music and string instruments.
17. Puzzles
Many 4-year-olds love to do puzzles! If you get puzzles that are easy enough, kids can do them by themselves, too.

Of course, there are countless puzzles out there, so you shouldn’t have any issue finding one to fit your child’s interests. I love the alphabet preschool puzzle for this age. It’s educational and you can design some letter learning games around it. I’m also a big fan of Ravensburger puzzles for their quality (though they aren’t particularly low-tox).
18. Books, Books, and More Books
Books are always a great gift option and I have a whole article on 50+ books for toddlers because I am so passionate about this topic.
Dr. Seuss is a classic for a reason, and I highly recommend some of his popular books. For this age group, his ABC Book is a particularly good option. After all, most children at this age are figuring out how to recognize their letters, and as they get closer to the age of 5, will be exploring how to read.
May I Please Have a Cookie is another solid book option. It is a level 1 scholastic reader, which means that the words are straightforward to understand.
This particular book teaches manners and features bright illustrations. This is also the perfect read if you have an early reader on your hands. With short, simple sentences, this will be one they can try to read with your help.
We love this book and it has a great lesson in it that helps kids understand the right way to ask for something they want.
Similar to the last option, these books are aimed at beginner readers. Each of the 8 books works on different reading skills and feature bright colored illustrations of their favorite Paw Patrol characters. Even if your 4-year-old is not reading, these books will be a huge hit, and best of all, will be good learning books when they are ready to start reading!
Giraffes Can’t Dance is a lyrical book that is great for this age. The illustrations are plentiful and eye-catching and the rhyming makes this book a fun read while reminding a child the important lesson to never give up on their dreams.

19. A Sorting Board
Sorting boards are great for 4-year-olds. Children can sort and stack shapes and colors, build patterns, and work on counting. These are great for a quiet time activity or independent play.
This geometric sorting board has bright colors and easy-to-grasp shapes.
20. A Pogo Stick
4-year-olds typically do not have the coordination for a regular pogo stick. However, the Flybar Pogo Stick is perfect for this age group. It’s fun, and bouncy and is sure to give your little energizer bunny a fun activity to do either outdoors or indoors. It’s great for working on balance and leg strength as well.
21. Balance Board
These wobble boards are a solid option for energetic children. Made from natural wood, this board can be used for balancing and so many more fun activities. Whether your child likes to swing in it or make a racetrack for toy cars, it’s extremely open-ended, and that’s why I love it so much.
22. Fun Dress-Up Costumes
Dress-up costumes are a fun way to play pretend. Kids love to take on the role of different characters, animals, and professions! Not only is this help them build vocabulary around specific narratives and situations, but it helps with emotional development.
Whether they want to be an adventurous pirate, a helpful doctor, or an animal-loving vet, there are costumes for every interest! I also love the costumes that Hanna Andersson makes (this is a great option if you want to simplify their costume options while keeping it low-tox).
23. PipSquigz
The PipSquigz are fun silicone suction and pop toys. They’re excellent fidget toys that will keep your 4-year-old busy with sensory play.
Each PipSquigz shape can suction to a smooth surface, be pulled, squeezed, pushed, and shaken. The pop sound is seemingly surprising every single time the Pip Squigz detaches from a surface, too!
24. Play BBQ Grill
If a child already has a play kitchen, a play BBQ grill can be an awesome addition. Four-year-olds love to mimic real cooking. It’s how they learn and imagine the real world. This particular play BBQ grill is very real-looking as it comes with a grill hood that opens and closes, burner knobs that turn, and a variety of foods and utensils perfect for your child’s BBQ party!
Another fun idea is a mud kitchen for outdoor play. This is so good for kids (and their microbiome).
25. Indoor Gardening Kit
Four-years-old is the perfect age to introduce science concepts. This indoor gardening kit is perfect for helping them figure out how plants grow. It includes everything they need to grow including three pots, three packs of organic seeds, and a trowel. Kids will have fun taking care of their plants and watching them grow with a little adult supervision.
26. Wooden Blocks
Blocks are a traditional childhood toy. These Planet Blocks are perfect gifts for this age. Most children at this age are beginning to learn their planets if they haven’t explored them already. These blocks help teach them this scientific concept while also encouraging plenty of open-ended play. (There are lots of other great building blocks that would be a great gift for the 4-year-old in your life, too!)
27. Sorting Games
These Sort and Count Cups are perfect for teaching the colors, counting, and encouraging fine motor skills. Children can sort by color, count, learn beginning math concepts, and invent their own open-ended games. They are made of rubberwood with non-toxic paints and dyes.
28. A Cleaning Set
If a four-year-old doesn’t already have a cleaning set, there is probably no better gift you could give them. Most four-year-olds love to “help”, and a little cleaning set that’s just the right size for them is the perfect way for them to do it.
29. Farm Playset
This little farm playset by Green Toys is a great open-ended toy for pretend play. Kids get a kick out of making animal noises and depicting a busy day on the farm.
With a pick-up truck, animals, barn, and animals, this is great for both collaborative and independent play. It is made in the USA of 100% recycled plastic from milk jugs, so you can feel good about buying it as well.
30. Board Games
As a first board game, the Raccoon Rumpus game is perfect. It is a very simple game and encourages color recognition and fine motor skills. Games like this help kids learn about the dynamics of taking turns, thinking strategically, and playing with others.
The First Orchard game is designed for this age group and is completely cooperative. Because of this, it is a suitable choice for most children who are just starting to dip their toes into board games. Kids can work together and have fun with a little bit of help! It’s also great because it only takes about 10 minutes to play so their attention spans can handle it!
31. Scavenger Hunt Game
This very easy scavenger hunt game is perfect for children who love to run around. It basically sends them on a mission to find everyday objects. Kids have a lot of fun with it, and you can do this both indoors and outdoors.
32. A Climbing Tower
As an outside toy, I like this climbing tower. It is designed for children ages 3 to 8, which makes it perfect for 4-year-olds and ensures they have a few years to use it. It is made of interlocking plastic tubes and connectors, making it extremely safe and durable.
33. Flash Cards
Flashcards can be fun to do with children this age. From color recognition to letters, numbers, and words, children can learn quickly and improve their memory skills. I recommend a set like this that they can do both independently and with mom or dad.
34. PlasmaCar
The PlasmaCar is perfect for four-year-olds who can’t yet ride a bike by themselves. It has a sleek design and is very easy to use. All they need to do is prop their feet up and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth to get moving. It’s made according to the guidelines of Canada and the EU, so you can bet that it is safe for children. (Here is a similar alternative called the Wiggle Car if the PlasmaCar is out of stock.)
35. Outdoor Adventure Pack
Outdoor play is very important at this age. It is essential for the development of motor skills and social skills, especially if other children are involved. For this reason, I highly recommend this outdoor adventure set, which contains everything your child needs to explore around outside! From binoculars to bug catchers, kids will have so much fun going on their outdoor expeditions!
36. Binoculars
While we’re on the topic of outdoor play, binoculars make a great standalone gift for four-year-olds. These binoculars from THINKPEAK are kid-friendly and come with a carrying case. Your little one will enjoy a lot of exploration time (just remind them not to look up at the sun!) and this is sure to be a great gift. It also comes in a few different colors so you can choose your child’s favorite shade for their binoculars.
