35 Gift Ideas for 3-Year-Olds That’ll Keep Them Busy for Hours

Shopping for a 3-year-old can be super fun. At this age, toddlers are pretty easy to shop for, and they have usually developed a strong interest in their toys and belongings.

In general, open-ended toys get played with more and can take the place of many different toys, which is super helpful when it comes to storage and clean-up. Gadgets and gimmicky toys (like my son’s Batman cars) are usually really exciting at first, and then end up never being played with again.

The key to choosing the perfect gift for a 3-year-old is selecting a gift they will play with for an extended period of time. Usually, this means choosing open-ended toys that can be used for all sorts of fun, imaginative play.

I’ve compiled a list of some of the best toys on the market for 3-year-olds! From indoor quiet-time activities to outdoor physical activities, I’ve got you covered!

1. Wooden Domino Set

Because 3-year-olds finally have a good grip on basic cause-and-effect, and their minor motor skills are quite developed. Wooden dominoes are an excellent option for this age.

This set comes with 100 wooden dominoes with a few fun add-ons. They’re also very open-ended, which means they’ll likely get more play overall.

2. Magnetic Fishing Game

Magnetic fish games can be surprisingly challenging for smaller children! They require a lot of concentration and fine motor development. However, children seem to love them.

Plus, this particular set includes the alphabet and color recognition, so you can definitely incorporate other games as well! This would be a very versatile and useful gift for any 3-year-old.

3. Snug-as-a-Bug Game

This cooperative game is perfect for 3-year-olds. It is easy enough for them to play with little help while also being difficult enough to keep their attention. It’s also nice because cooperative games introduce board game play without competitiveness getting in the way. A tantrum avoided!

4. Stepping Stones

For active children, stepping stones make the perfect gift. They allow you to design a safe obstacle course inside or outside in a matter of minutes. This toy is great for rainy days and energetic 3-year-olds (as well as toddlers with extra sensory needs).

5. Balance Board

Wooden balance boards are another gift great for energetic kiddos! On top of using them for balancing, these can also be used for a wide variety of other play opportunities.

The balance board is very open-ended, so your child will probably discover all sorts of ways to play with it. My kids like to race their toy cars down the balance board and send them flying under the board. They’ve even incorporated their balance board into their block towers.

6. Scooter

Even if your child finds a tricycle too challenging to use for more extended periods, they may be interested in a scooter. Scooters are much easier to use than other ride-on options, making them a good starting point for children who haven’t quite got the peddle motion down yet.

7. Radio Flyer Ramp

If your child already has a radio flyer tricycle or another ride-on toy, the Radio Flyer Ramp is a reliable way to take their riding to the next level. It provides some level of excitement while still being very safe. Plus, this ramp can easily be packed up and stored away when your child isn’t using it.

8. Busy Board

Busy boards are all about helping toddlers develop their fine motor skills. They include latches to be latched and laces to be tied. They’re a screen-free activity that is perfect for keeping children calm and quiet. They are particularly useful for car rides and travel.

There are many busy boards out there, but the Montessori Busy Board by deMoca is among the best. It is made of high-quality wood. Plus, the latches are a bit more advanced than other boards, making them great for this age group.

9. Rainbow Blocks

While building with regular building blocks is fun, these Montessori-inspired sensory Rainbow Blocks make it even more exciting. They have bright colored windows that 3 year-olds love to look through!

10. Puzzles

There are tons of different puzzles on the market, and many of them would make a good gift for a 3-year olds. I particularly like the 24-piece floor puzzles by Petit Collage. The puzzles are large, colorful, and bright, while also being easy enough for many 3-year-olds to do by themselves.

11. A Camera

Some 3-year-olds may be ready for their own camera. There are lots of options out there but I personally love the Vtech KidiZoom based on its ease of use and a wide variety of features.

My kids have also really taken to the simple video games that are available on this camera (the bunny game is their favorite). I know the mention of video games might scare some parents, but these games are simple enough that we have allowed our kids to play with them from time-to-time (while always being mindful of screen time).

12. The Lovevery Block Set

I love the Lovevery company! Their toys are high-quality and age-appropriate. Their Block Set is one of the best I’ve ever seen and is wonderful for all ages.

These blocks can do so much more than other block sets. The box can even be turned into a toy car! This is by far the most creative, open-ended block set out there.

13. Binoculars

Binoculars are a fun and exciting way for children to view birds and other distant objects. There are many children’s binoculars on the market, but many of them don’t work as well as they could. These binoculars by Obuby work really well which is why I recommend them.

14. Teeter Popper

A Teeter Popper is a major motor skill toy that sensory-seeking kids love. If your three-year-old loves to swing and spin, this toy will probably be a huge hit. It really works on balance and coordination, and kids have so much fun with it! This toy is extremely durable and built to withstand 110 pounds.

15. Whirly Squigz

The Whirly Squigz is like an oversized fidget-spinner. Like most Fat Brain toys, they’re BPA-free and thoroughly safety tested. These are mostly made from silicone and can suction onto any surface for fun spinning.

The larger size and interesting contours make it easy for toddlers to explore and spin them. These are great to stick on a refrigerator or other nearby surface to keep kids entertained! I stuck these on the car windows for long drives; they’d also be great for air travel with your toddler.

16. Personalized Name Puzzle

At this age, your child may enjoy a personalized name puzzle. Children often take more interest in letters if there is some vested interest there – like when the letters spell their name!

17. Play food

Pretend food is always a hit with children. They can pretend to cook and serve food to you and all their other toys. This is also a really great add-on for a play kitchen if you have one!

I love this nontoxic set of wooden play food. It’s high-quality and also has a built-in activity of “cutting” the food with the included wooden knife.

18. Laura Numeroff Books

Laura Numeroff is a hit children’s book author that kids in this age group seem to love. She has countless books available that are perfect for 3-year-olds. For a fun twist on a classical story, consider If You Give a Dog a Donut.

19. Squirrel Game

We love the Squirrel Game for introducing the concept of competitive board games to young children. The game also helps children with color-recognition and fine motor skills, making it perfect for this age group. While there are many board games suitable for this age, this one is one of my favorites.

20. A Drum Set

Toddlers love to bang on things! A drum set is a perfect outlet for this. I particularly like this drum set by Mendini since it is about as close as you can get to the real thing. If you’re worried about the sound, try putting hand towels on the drums and it will muffle some of the sounds. Or you could get your 3-year-old an electronic drum set (which conveniently comes with headphones) if you prefer.

21. Magna-Tiles

Full disclosure: Magna-Tiles are pretty much on all of my gift guides. They are just amazing and great for STEM-play.

While wooden blocks are fun, Magna Tiles are even better. You can build even more structures with these small magnetic blocks. Most three-year-olds will be able to use these tiles independently, giving them tons of independent play opportunities.

Keep in mind that these do contain magnets, so you should always supervise your little one while playing with these.

22. Musical Instruments

There’s a wide range of musical instruments out there for toddlers. Most children at this age love music, making up songs, and dancing. While there are many musical sets and instruments on the market, I really like this Janod Ukulele. It is about as close as you can get to a real instrument. Ours lasted many years!

23. A Play Kitchen

Many play kitchens are costly, which can make many people avoid buying them. However, this kitchen by Hape is exceptionally affordable and functional. It provides an oven, stove, and sink where children can “cook” up all different kinds of food. Throw in some play food, and your child will be good-to-go.

24. A Master Workbench

This Hape Workbench is another larger toy that many three-year-olds will have fun with. This particular workbench contains a hammer, screwdriver, angle, vice, and saw. It also has all the nuts, gears, bolts, and other fun building parts.

It is very open-ended and provides hours of playtime. Plus, it’s very well-built and is sure to last through multiple children. No other accessories are needed; it comes with everything your child needs to have fun.

25. Grocery Set

For pretend play, a grocery set is a fun activity for your child to play grocery store with. Melissa and Doug make a great Grocery Store Set.

It comes with 70 different pieces: everything your child needs to go shopping and run their store. It comes with boxes and jars to purchase, fake money, shopping bags, and a plethora of other accessories.

26. A Children’s Kindle

If you want to purchase your 3-year-old an electronic device, I recommend the Kids Kindle. It comes with parental controls and a lifetime warranty. If your child happens to break it, Amazon will even replace it.

It comes with a year of Amazon Freetime, which provides plenty of free educational, age-appropriate apps, books, and shows for your child to enjoy. Parental controls also allow you to set time limits on screen time as well as set priorities. For example, you can set it so that your child must read books for 20 minutes before they can access games or shows.

27. Wooden Blocks

This classic child’s toy shouldn’t be missed. Wooden blocks are perfect for all sorts of independent, creative play. These are made from solid, unfinished wood.

They are about as open-ended as they come, which means children will often play with them for a very long time. They can do practically everything. One day they may be a castle, and then the next, they may be the fence to your child’s very own zoo.

We have two sets of these, and my kids play with them daily (the trick is that we keep them in the living room). And they keep asking for us to get more sets—that’s how awesome these are!

28. Candyland

Candyland is a classical child’s board game. The best part about this game is that numbers are not required to play. Instead, the game uses colored spaces, so it’s great for color recognition and learning how to play board games.

29. Memory Match Farm Game

3-year-olds are just starting to be able to play memory-style games. To get started, I recommend this set of cards. They’re based on common farm animals, which makes them easy for children to use.

Even if your child can’t figure them out quite yet, many will love looking through the cards and making up their own games.

30. I Spy Books

I Spy books are a great quiet activity for this age group. My kids loved to look at I Spy books at this age. They were an easy way to keep them entertained on long car rides.

There are many different I Spy books out there. However, I found this one the easiest for children to use independently. Plus, it’s also a fun nighttime read aloud!

31. Threading Toy

Similar to a busy board, threading toys encourage fine motor skills and concentration. They’re more challenging than they look, especially when you still aren’t very experienced using your hands!

Coogam’s Wooden Lacing Animals are perfect to start with. They are easy and entertaining and also great for car rides!

32. Gardening Set

If you like to spend time in the garden, your child will likely enjoy their own gardening set. This inexpensive set by Green Toys includes a watering can, towel, and small rake.

33. A Train Set

If your 3-year-old doesn’t have a train set yet, the BRIO My First Railway set is a reliable option. It is smaller than some of the enormous sets out there, affordable, and still lots of fun.

It includes a train, rainbow bridge, and other fun accessories. You can also purchase it with a small farm or zoo set, which can add even more variety to your child’s play.

34. Pizza Counter

Mellissa and Doug have wholly outdone themselves on this Wooden Pizza Counter. This set includes a pizza oven, toppings, a pizza box, play money, and tons more. This pizza counter is sure to inspire plenty of pretend play!

35. Radio Flyer All-Terrain Pathfinder Wagon

For all the places you and your little one will go, this wagon can help you get there. It is comfortable for your child and even comes with a canopy for extra shade. Simultaneously, though, it is built to travel over a wide variety of terrains so that you can take it almost anywhere.

Choosing the Perfect Toy for Your 3-Year-Old

With so many different options to choose from on this list, it can be challenging to choose just a few for your child! By the time most children are 3 years old, they can usually help you figure out what they want. You may want to consider showing them this list and see what catches their eye.

Alternatively, you could go off their interest and consider what other toys they currently have. With 35+ gift ideas on this list, you’re sure to find something your child will like that they don’t already have! Or you could consider adding onto a favorite toy set! Happy shopping!

Thank you so much for all the ideas Jasmine. Picked quite a few. The radio flyer wagon link does not work by the way.
