Toys are an important part of your child’s development, and there is one type of toy in particular I feel deserves its own spotlight. Dolls!
I may be a bit biased because I was pretty attached to my “Pink Baby” as a kid. That is, until I put her next to the space heater to “keep her warm”…and her hair melted. Can you imagine the toxins from that? Yikes!
My own bias aside, allowing your child to play with dolls can have enormous benefits.
Unfortunately, as with other toys, dolls can contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Kids often sleep with and cuddle their dolls, exposing them to these toxins, so it’s important to choose high-quality, non-toxic dolls for your little one.
Why Dolls?
There have been quite a few studies on the effects of playing with dolls. This research has shown that playing with dolls has positive behavioral impacts, including supporting the development of social skills.
One study found that playing with dolls activates areas in the brain that are associated with empathy. In other words, imaginative play with dolls can help your child recognize feelings in other people and think about what they can do to help someone feel better when they are unhappy.
By brushing their doll’s hair and teeth, getting them dressed, “feeding” them, and rocking them, your little one can also learn about self-care (and maybe even make those teeth brushing battles just a bit easier on everyone).
What to Look For in a Non-Toxic Doll or Stuffed Animal?
Instead of hard plastic dolls, choose natural wood, organic cotton, or natural rubber materials. Choose dolls made in America or Europe and avoid those made in China. Avoid scented dolls. You know the ones! They smell like baby powder, vanilla, or fruit.
With plush or stuffed animals, look for organic cotton or wool as the outside material. Even better if you can find one that doesn’t have a polyester fill, but this is something you might decide you’re comfortable with depending on various factors including your child’s age and how often they will play with the toy.
What to Avoid When Buying Dolls
Plastic – Many plastics often have extremely toxic additives, such as BPA and BPS (bisphenols).
Bisphenols are a group of chemicals used to make hard plastics. They are also known to be endocrine disruptors and have been linked to impacts on behavior and learning.
Opt for dolls made of natural rubber instead of plastic.
❌ Polyvinyl Chloride – Most soft plastic dolls are made of polyvinyl chloride or PVC. PVC contains toxins such as bisphenol chemicals and heavy metals. The production of PVC is also extremely bad for the environment.
Again, look for dolls made of natural materials instead of PVC, which is what many mainstream dolls are made from.
❌ Fragrance – Fragrances are a mix of ingredients, typically with added synthetics that are linked to endocrine disruption. Fragrances often include phthalates (more on this below).
Avoid scented dolls.
❌ Phthalates – Another known endocrine disruptor, phthalates have also shown links to eczema and developmental impacts. These are typically found in “fragrance” and other ingredients.
❌ Heavy Metals – Lead and other heavy metals are well known to have significant neurologic and other health impacts, especially on developing children. These can be found in paint on dolls, in PVC, and doll clothing.
❌ Polyethylene terephthalate (Polyester) – Polyethylene terephthalate, also known as polyester is a popular material for doll clothes and accessories.
Polyester is often treated with chemicals to make it wrinkle, water, and sometimes flame-resistant. These chemicals have been linked to reproductive and other issues. Do your best to avoid dolls with polyester clothing and accessories and instead choose those made of cotton.
Non-Toxic Dolls I Recommend
One option you have is to search Etsy for a handmade doll. I know many mamas who have had dolls handmade for their little ones and this is definitely an option to consider. In addition, there are a number of organic and non-toxic toymakers making safe dolls and plushies for our little ones. Here are the ones I have come across and can recommend:
1) Plastic-Free Dolls
Eco Baby Dolls
These non-toxic dolls are made of natural rubber, which is non-toxic and biodegradable as it is harvested from the sap of rubber trees. The doll’s clothes are made of cotton.
Per Ecobaby, their dolls are free from BPA, PVC, and phthalates.
These are a great substitute for plastic dolls!
Tikiri Dolls
This brand sells a natural rubber doll that is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified.
Of note, the soft dolls made by this company are filled with polyester filling. There are some better options in this article so I would not recommend the soft dolls from this brand.

These dolls are made of GOTS-certified cotton, and you can’t get much more non-toxic than that!

These are SO cute! While this one does have a bit of polyester, I am including it in the list. The Tikiri site states the doll is BPA free, phthalate free, and PVC free.
The outer fabric is organic cotton and the filling is 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled polyester.
Made in Sri Lanka.
Senger Organic Stuffed Animals
Senger stuffed animals are made with an organic cotton fill and wool outer layer. These quality stuffed animals are beautifully made and are sure to be your child’s favorite. Some of them double as a warming or cooling toy for your child’s comfort.

While not the most sturdy of options, these could make a fun activity.
I hope you find a non-toxic doll for your little one that they love!

I just purchased a supposedly non-toxic doll made of natural rubber. Only to learn on the internet that natural rubber can also contain lead, which the rubber trees pick up from the environment (I think from the soil). I’d love to know what you think about this finding.
Thanks so much,

Terry, which brand/doll did you buy? Honestly, anything from nature can contain heavy metals so it’s up to us to make the best decision considering the options we have available. Let me know which brand or post a link and I can let you know my thoughts.
