Why You Should Never Use Dryer Sheets on Baby Clothes (and What to Use Instead)

Getting ready to wash your baby’s clothes and linens? Or perhaps you’re seeking a cleaner, more eco-friendly laundry routine for your family. While choosing a baby-safe laundry detergent is essential, it’s equally important to reconsider using dryer sheets and fabric softeners. These products are major sources of unnecessary toxic chemicals, which have been linked to asthma and allergies.

The Hidden Dangers of Dryer Sheets

Conventional dryer sheets and fabric softeners are often marketed as essential for keeping laundry soft, static-free, and pleasantly scented. However, these products can introduce a host of hidden dangers, especially for babies and individuals with sensitive skin or respiratory issues.

Chemical Cocktail

Dryer sheets are typically coated with various chemicals released into the air and onto your clothing during the drying process. Some of these chemicals include:

  • Benzyl Acetate: Linked to respiratory irritation.
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Associated with upper respiratory tract irritation.
  • Chloroform: A carcinogen that can cause dizziness, nausea, and headaches.
  • Linalool: Known to cause skin reactions and central nervous system disorders.
  • Synthetic Fragrance: Known to contain phthalates and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

These chemicals can linger on your clothing and be absorbed through the skin or inhaled, posing potential health risks.

Respiratory Issues

The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by dryer sheets can exacerbate respiratory problems. Individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions may find their symptoms worsening after exposure to these chemicals. Babies and young children, with their still-developing respiratory systems, are particularly vulnerable to these irritants.

Skin Irritation

The fragrances and softening agents in dryer sheets can cause skin irritation, rashes, and allergic reactions. For babies, whose skin is far more sensitive than adults, this risk is even greater. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can lead to chronic skin conditions and discomfort.

Questionable Ingredients

Even products labeled as “Free & Clear” or “hypoallergenic” can contain hidden chemicals that may not be immediately apparent. For example, Bounce dryer sheets, including their Free & Clear version, have received C and D ratings from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). These ratings indicate the presence of ingredients that may pose moderate to high health concerns.

A Better Alternative: Wool Dryer Balls

Given the yuck ingredients and potential health risks, ditching the dryer sheets is one of the simplest things you can do to clean up your baby’s laundry routine (and not to mention, your own). Wool dryer balls are a much better alternative and are going to be free from so many of the harmful chemicals found in conventional dryer sheets.

Woolzies Dryer Balls

Dryer balls are safe and gentle for your baby’s laundry routine and offer multiple benefits:

🌿 Convenience: You can leave wool dryer balls in your dryer between uses, so there’s no need to remember to add them each time you do laundry.

🌿 None of the Chemicals: Unlike dryer sheets, pure wool dryer balls should contain no harmful chemicals. They are made from 100% wool, naturally softening clothes and reducing static cling. Organic wool is going to be cleaner than non-organic, of course, because of the chemicals required to process wool. But otherwise, you’re looking at a product that contains far fewer materials or ingredients than a dryer sheet. In fact, there should be no other ingredients aside from wool.

🌿 Energy Efficiency: Wool dryer balls can help reduce drying time by improving air circulation in your dryer, up to an estimated 30% improvement. This not only saves energy but also prolongs the life of your clothes. Win!

🌿 Cost Savings: Wool dryer balls are durable and can last for thousands of loads, making them a more economical choice compared to dryer sheets. For example, Seventh Generation Free & Clear dryer sheets are $7.29 at Target (at the time of publishing), which gets you 80 loads of laundry. That comes out to $0.09 per load of laundry. Bounce Outdoor Fresh dryer sheets are $2.99 for 60 loads, which comes out to about $0.05 per load of laundry.

PricePrice/Load
Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dryer Sheets$7.29 (80 loads)$0.09 per load
Bounce Outdoor Fresh Dryer Sheets$2.99 (60 loads)$0.05 per load

On the other hand, wool dryer balls can run from $7.99-$19.99 and can last you an estimated 1,000 loads of laundry. Let’s just break that down into 500 and 1000 loads to give us a fair and conservative look at how this prices out:

Price500 loads1,000 loads
Wool Dryer Balls (low cost)$7.99$0.02 per load$0.01 per load
Wool Dryer Balls (premium)$19.99$0.04 per load$0.02 per load

As you can see, you’ll get plenty more use out of dryer balls and you won’t need to run to the store after every 60 loads of laundry!

If you’re new to the idea of using wool dryer balls, the transition is simple. Start by purchasing a set of six balls, which you can use three at a time for small to medium-sized loads. For larger loads, use all six balls.

Safety Tip: Avoid Essential Oils

While adding a few drops of essential oil to your dryer balls might be tempting for a pleasant scent, it’s important to avoid this practice. Essential oils are flammable and can pose a safety risk in the dryer. Instead, enjoy the natural freshness of your clean laundry.

Why Choose Wool Dryer Balls?

Switching to wool dryer balls is one of the simplest and most impactful changes to detoxify your laundry routine. By avoiding harmful chemicals, you ensure that your baby’s clothes and linens are soft, static-free, and safe for their sensitive skin. Plus, the environmental benefits of reduced energy consumption and less waste make this a sustainable choice for your household.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating wool dryer balls into your laundry routine is a small change with significant benefits. You’re choosing a safer, healthier, and more sustainable way to care for your family’s laundry needs. So why rely on petrochemicals when there’s a natural, effective alternative?

Or, honestly, you could just ditch the dryer sheets altogether and not use (gasp) anything! You might be wondering if you need to add anything to your dryer at all. The answer is no, in most cases. The “static cling” marketing myth has led many to believe that dryer additives are necessary, but often, you can dry your clothes without any additives and achieve great results. Initially, I switched to dryer balls and, over time, found that I didn’t need to use anything in my dryer at all. It works perfectly for our family. However, if you’re not ready to go completely additive-free, wool dryer balls are an excellent compromise.

Clean up that laundry routine, mama, with a clean baby laundry detergent and by switching to dryer sheets. Your baby’s skin will thank you.
