Looking for school snack inspiration? Here are 50+ healthy school snack ideas for kids!

Packing snacks for little ones can be challenging, especially when you want to ensure they’re healthy and appealing. It’s hard when there’s so much temptation at school (why do schools give out so much candy and sweets!?). Making snack time and school lunches fun and healthy is the way to go! Here’s a detailed list of healthy school snack ideas for kids, organized by category, to help you provide nutritious and fun options for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-age children.

Tips for Packing Snacks

  • Variety is Key: Mix different textures, colors, and flavors to keep snacks interesting. Try not to send the same thing every day unless you have a picky eater on your hands. Depending on the child’s preferences and how long snack time is at school, I usually pack two or three items from this list daily. When I notice that my kids didn’t finish their lunch, that’s usually a sign that I sent too much food at snack time.
  • Portion Size: Make sure that the portions you send in are appropriate for your child’s age to prevent overeating or food waste.
  • Silicone Cups: Use silicone cups and divided lunchboxes or snack cups to hold snacks.
  • Serve balanced snacks: Aim for a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to keep your little one satisfied and energized.
  • Hydration: Include a water bottle to keep your child hydrated throughout the day.
  • Food Safety: Use insulated lunch bags and freezer ice packs to keep perishable items fresh. I use these freezer snack bags (or these smaller ones) when I send fresh fruit, veggies, or dairy to school.

School Snack Ideas for Kids

Here are over 50 snack ideas listed by category. Mix and match these items to create a great snack combination for your child. The best thing about this list is that it is realistic. I have been there, packing lunches and snacks every single day for an entire school year. I know it can get a little challenging after a couple of months.

That’s why I kept this list simple. For the most part, these school snack ideas don’t require a lot of prep or even cooking or baking. I do bake and prep snacks occasionally, but I find that most days, I like to keep snack time simple. You have both types of options below! And, you can enlist the help of your kids when packing their snacks and school lunches.

Fruits

Fruits are a natural source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them so important in a child’s daily diet. These snacks are nutritious and naturally sweet. Fruit is a must in my kids’ snack bags. They love apples, but I also mix it up now and then! Try sending one type of fruit at a time, slicing up a few of your child’s favorites into a fruit salad, or even making fruit kabobs.
