Let’s be honest, nobody wants to be standing there wondering if other people can smell them. Or the person everyone’s whispering about because they forgot to apply their deodorant.
And, it can be hard to find the “right” deodorant that works for you. So many of the commercial deodorants available today are packed with aluminum, harsh chemicals, and toxic fragrances. Mainstream aluminum-based should be avoided 100%.
And while there are many effective all-natural deodorants on the market, not every deodorant works for every body. We’re all different, and what might work for me might not be the best choice for your skin or your body.
But what if I told you there’s a natural alternative that you might not have considered? Enter: magnesium oil. Today, we’re diving deep into how to use magnesium oil as a deodorant and the benefits that come along with it. 🌿
What is Magnesium Oil?
Magnesium oil isn’t technically an oil. It’s a mixture of magnesium chloride and water, creating a sprayable, topical magnesium solution.
Magnesium is an essential mineral our bodies require for a multitude of functions — over 600 of them! Many of us don’t get enough of it in our diets because the soil has been depleted, and topically applying it can be an effective way of increasing our magnesium levels.
Whether you use magnesium oil as deodorant or not, it has so many benefits for your body. It’s great for anyone with MTHFR, ADHD, and the general population, too.
So whether you just use magnesium oil topically for the absorption benefits, or you use it as a deodorant, you’re getting a nice dose of magnesium oil absorbed through your skin.

Why Use Magnesium Oil as a Deodorant?
It turns out that magnesium oil works well as a natural deodorant. Magnesium oil can help neutralize body odor, even though it doesn’t have a strong scent of its own. In fact, most magnesium oils are unscented. (The one I use is just magnesium chloride and water; it doesn’t contain any additional ingredients or fragrances.)
And, in addition to being effective, it’s environmentally friendly, additive-free, and can support your magnesium intake.
Using Magnesium Oil as a Deodorant
- Purchase or Make Your Own: If you plan to buy magnesium oil, you’ll find that the most convenient versions come in a spray bottle; I prefer magnesium in a glass spray bottle. Alternatively, you can make your own by dissolving magnesium chloride flakes in water (usually a half-and-half mixture).
- Application: After your morning shower, dry your armpits and spray 2-3 sprays of magnesium oil under each arm. Allow it to dry for a moment before getting dressed.
- Patch Test First: As with any new skincare product, always do a patch test first to ensure you don’t react. Some tingling is normal initially, but if irritation persists, discontinue use.
- Moisturize: Some find magnesium oil slightly drying. Consider applying a natural moisturizer or oil like jojoba oil afterwards.

Instructions
- Apply 2-3 sprays of unscented magnesium oil directly to clean underarms. Allow it to dry for a moment before getting dressed.
- If you find the magnesium oil itchy or drying, consider applying a natural moisturizer or oil, like jojoba oil, afterward.
Notes
- As with any new skincare product, do a patch test to make sure you don’t react to the product. Some tingling is normal at first, but if irritation persists , discontinue use.
- It’s best to use an unscented and pure magnesium oil that doesn’t contain any added ingredients or fragrances (like this one).
- If you’d like to make your own magnesium oil instead of buying a premade one, you can dissolve equal parts of magnesium chloride flakes into water and add to a clean spray bottle.
Tips and Considerations
Finding the right all-natural deodorant can take a little trial and error. When it comes to using magnesium oil as a deodorant, there are a few tips and things to keep in mind to help you make this work.

- Underarms are sensitive: Your underarms will be sensitive, especially if you are switching from a conventional deodorant to using magnesium oil or even a natural deodorant. Don’t expect immediate results; it might take some time and your skin might react at first. Take it slowly, and give your body time to adjust to using magnesium oil as a deodorant.
- Tingling sensation: Don’t be alarmed if you feel a tingling sensation when you first use magnesium oil. This is common, especially if you’re magnesium deficient. It should decrease with regular use after your body gets used to the application. If this bothers you, you can always dilute the magnesium oil in water or jojoba oil; add a couple of drops of jojoba oil into your hand, spray the magnesium oil into your palm, and mix together. Then, apply directly to your underarms.
- Don’t apply magnesium oil right after shaving: Applying magnesium oil immediately after shaving may cause stinging. To avoid this, wait a while after shaving before applying.
- It’s not an antiperspirant: Remember, magnesium oil will help neutralize odor, but it won’t stop you from sweating. Sweating is natural and helps detoxify your body. There are NO natural antiperspirants because the process isn’t natural. Remember: sweating is OK and natural. (And healthy!)
Final Thoughts
Switching to natural and non-toxic alternatives for personal care is a journey. Using magnesium oil as a deodorant might not be for everyone, but it’s worth giving a shot, especially if you’re aiming for a more natural, chemical-free lifestyle. Or if you’ve tried a number of other all-natural deodorants and they haven’t quite worked for you.
Remember, our bodies are unique, and what works for one might not work for another. But this is one simple, non-toxic hack that you might want to try!
