Looking for a safe, non-toxic crib for your baby? We’ve rounded up the very best cribs for you.

Buying nursery furniture for your baby is always so exciting! I especially love looking at the variety of crib styles. In the shopping process, however, it’s very important to remember that safety and health will always trump aesthetics. After all, your little one will spend up to 18 hours a day in his crib! You want to feel good about it.

  • The Best Non-Toxic Cribs
  • Happy Crib Shopping!

Unfortunately, the vast majority of conventional furnishings off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and may contain toxic chemicals that eventually saturate your indoor air. This is not something you want your baby breathing in all day!

Like shopping for an organic crib mattress that meets certain specifications and standards (no polyurethane foam!), I also recommend similar criteria when considering a crib for your baby.

What To Look For When Buying a Non-Toxic Crib

Let’s review some key components you want to look for in a crib when shopping.

✅ Solid Wood

I always recommend looking for a solid wood crib. This means no synthetic materials and no plywood, particleboard, veneers, or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). These wood types are typically manufactured with layers of composite and glues, which can release formaldehyde and dangerous amounts of various VOCs into the air.

When you opt for solid wood, you won’t find any extra toxic chemicals in the material and will reduce the amount of off-gassing in your baby’s nursery. It’s always wise to check the materials used in all parts of the crib. This includes the crib frame, crib rails, and crib bars. Sometimes cribs may have a solid wood frame, but use MDF for the bars, for example. While this is a step in the right direction it’s not pure solid wood. You’ll need to decide what you’re comfortable with.

Solid wood is also much more sturdy and durable! Can’t beat that!

✅ Low VOC Paints and Finishes (or none!)

When you shop for a crib, you’ll find manufacturers use a variety of paints, stains, and finishes. It can be a little confusing! The most important part is that the material does not off-gas VOCs. The safest finish on a solid wood crib will always be food-grade oils or water-based stains/paints that are certified non-toxic.

✅ Greenguard Gold Certification

In addition to your more general certifications required by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Juvenile Product Manufacturing Association, and ASTM International certificates, I always recommend going for a crib that has a Greenguard Gold certification.

The Greenguard Gold certification will ensure that the product meets strict standards in terms of indoor air quality and chemical composition. The process to obtain this certification involves testing over 10,000 chemicals and 360 VOCs. I trust this certification and think it’s very important when it comes to a baby’s crib.

The Best Non-Toxic Cribs

I’ve compared hundreds of cribs on the market and found the very best for you! So, if you’re looking for a healthy, non-toxic crib for your baby’s nursery, check out these recommendations.

Cribs by Romina Furniture

Romina Furniture is one of the very best, non-toxic baby furniture brands you can find. Made in Romina, all of their furnishings are solid wood with nontoxic finishes and carry the Greenguard Gold certification. All Romina products are designed and tested to meet US standard size and CPSC requirements. Do note that all Romina furniture is made-to-order, so it can take up to 14 weeks for delivery (subject to change). Their furnishings are stunning though. These truly beautiful, made-to-last pieces will make any nursery shine.

Karisma Classic Crib

The Karisma Classic Crib is a wonderful choice for smaller nurseries. It is very simple but gorgeous! Made of 100% solid hardwood, this crib has non-toxic, water-based, and organic oil finish options. As mentioned, you won’t find any formaldehyde or VOCs in this crib. It’s also Greenguard Gold certified. With three mattress heights to adjust as your baby grows, you can convert this crib to a toddler bed with the optional toddler rail.

New York Crib

The New York Crib has a great modern, mid-century flair that fits small spaces. I love that it has so many two-tone color options, too! And, as your baby grows, this crib will too. You can convert this crib to a toddler bed or a day bed, so the investment will last you years to come.

Uptown Classic Crib

The Romina Uptown Classic crib has a wonderfully modern, sleek style with three mattress height settings. You’ll love the abundance of color options, too (there are 8!). I just love how this crib adds the right touch of substance to any nursery. It has a nice texture and presence to it, yet looks cozy! As with all Romina furnishings, it’s durable, sturdy, and completely non-toxic.

Ventianni Convertible Crib

The Ventianni convertible crib has robust clean lines, and it can last you the entirety of your childhood. It has four stages of conversion! You do need to buy the full bed conversion kit, but it’s a great value, especially considering how safe and durable these furnishings are. Additionally, while in the crib stage, there are three mattress heights to choose from that will grow with your baby.

Karisma Convertible Crib | Open Panel

This Karisma Convertible Crib is a 4-stage crib, meaning it can be a crib, a toddler bed, a big-kid day bed, and a full-size bed! Note you do need to purchase separate conversion kits for each. You’ll notice this particular Karisma crib has a back panel design that still lets a lot of airflow in and around the crib.

You’ll see that it also maintains the same modern but classic look. It blends in with any nursery style and stays gender-neutral. You’ll get plenty of use out of this crib!

Imperio Convertible Crib | Solid Panel

This craftsman-style crib is sturdy and cozy. It has a pedestal base with wide angles all around the paneled boards. I love that this style could fit in with any traditional furnishings. It has 3 mattress heights, and you can convert it to a day bed without any additional kits to purchase. You can also purchase kits for conversion for a full-size bed.

Cribs by Green Cradle

Green Cradle cribs are all-natural and made in the USA. All of their cribs are 100% solid wood. You won’t find a stitch of plywood, MDF, veneers, engineered wood, or composite wood, and their oil finishes are also chemical and formaldehyde free. This is a great company that prides itself on all things non-toxic. I highly recommend looking at their cribs especially if you want something made in the USA.

Gratitude Panel Crib

The Gratitude Panel crib is simple and sleek. It has two paneled sides for a touch of style. As with all Green Cradle products, this crib has a solid wood construction and is made from local sustainably-grown trees. It’s available in multiple kinds of wood and finishes as well, so you’ll have your choice of solid brown maple, red oak, hard maple, cherry, and walnut. The finish on the wood is free of VOCs and made of cold-pressed linseed oil (flaxseed oil).

This particular crib has two adjustable mattress positions. You can add conversion kits to your order to transform the crib into a toddler bed, day bed, or full-size bed.

Childspose Slat Crib

This has a traditional structure with rounded slats and a smooth frame. As with all Green Cradle products, it’s made from local sustainably-grown trees and has a solid wood construction. It’s available in multiple kinds of woods and finishes, so you’ll have your choice of solid brown maple, red oak, hard maple, cherry, and walnut. The finish on the wood is free of VOCs and made of cold-pressed linseed oil (flaxseed oil).

The foundation of this crib features solid wood slats (maple wood), which provide a firm flat surface for the crib mattress. Again, if you want to purchase separate conversion kits, you can transform this crib into a toddler bed with a rail, day bed, or full-size bed!

Footprint Slat Crib

The Footprint Slat crib is one of Green Cradle’s best cribs. People love it because it’s very traditional and practical. The rails go all the way around the crib for great airflow and the back of the crib sits a little higher than the rest of the crib to offer an inviting and elegant feel. You will love the solid wood construction and the variety of stain options. As with the other Green Cradle cribs, it has a wood slat foundation. This particular crib has three mattress heights and has the ability to convert into a toddler bed, a day bed, or a full-size bed.

Clover Green Slat Crib

The clover green slat crib has some great lines to it. I love the slight arches to give just a touch of uniqueness. As with the other Green Cradle cribs, its solid wood construction is durable, and its wood slat foundation provides a firm, flat safe sleep environment. This particular crib has three mattress heights for each stage of development. Beyond that, you can convert this crib into a toddler bed, a day bed, or a full-size bed.

Moss Green Slat Crib

The Moss Green crib has a very sturdy and casual look. It features wider crib slats all the way around, making it very clean and ordered. Its natural look yields a balanced and cozy crib that would be perfect for a farmhouse look.

This crib is available in solid brown maple, red oak, hard maple, cherry, and walnut woods, and has a variety of stain options. This crib has three mattress height adjustments for your growing baby, and you can purchase separate conversion kits for the crib to transform into a toddler bed with a rail, a day bed, or a full-size bed.

Natart Cribs

Natart produces Italian design furnishings made in Canada. They are a wonderful, family-owned company that originated in Italy and migrated to Canada. They construct their cribs with solid wood for durability. You’ll also appreciate that they are air-quality certified under the Greenguard Gold certification program. They test their products annually with third-party labs and conform to both US and Canadian safety standards.

Como “4-in-1” Convertible Crib

The Como crib has a wonderfully simple and natural look. It has a solid back panel with streamlined rails on the remaining three sides. These solid wood cribs have solid oak with oak veneer and come with high-quality finishes (all non-toxic). You’ll love some of the small details like the hidden hardware (no visible screws!) and the perfectly square corners so the mattress fits with ease!

With three adjustable heights (made of wooden slats) and the ability to convert the crib to a toddler bed, daybed, or full bed in the future, it makes for a great investment.

Como Island Crib

A true luxurious aesthetic, this crib has wonderful details to it. With the exact same safety standards as all Natart cribs, it is Greenguard Gold certified, made in Canada, and made of ash wood. It has three adjustable heights and can convert to a toddler bed, daybed, or full-size bed (only in the Como Conertible model) in the future when your little one is ready!

Taylor “5-in-1” Convertible Crib

The Taylor crib has a very sturdy, more robust look but brings in a nice streamlined aesthetic with the squared legs.

This solid oak crib comes with high-quality finishes (all non-toxic). Note that you will find oak veneer on the headboard back panel. You’ll love some of the small details like the hidden hardware (no visible screws!) and the perfectly square corners so the mattress fits perfectly.

With three adjustable heights (made of wooden slats) and the ability to confer the crib to a toddler bed, daybed, or full bed in the future.

Cribs by Babyletto

Babyletto has a great collection of modern crib designs! They are durable, tested for safety, and are Greenguard Gold certified. Many of the cribs have such nice details, and clean designs, and can convert into full-size beds for future use. Here are the few that we would consider.

Pogo 8-in-1 Convertible Crib

The Babyletto Pogo 8-in-1 Convertible Crib is a versatile and stylish choice for modern nurseries. Crafted from 100% sustainable New Zealand pine wood, it transitions seamlessly through eight configurations: bassinet, midi crib, midi toddler bed, midi daybed, full-size crib, full toddler bed, full daybed, and junior bed. This adaptability supports your child’s growth from newborn to approximately five years old. Amazing and elegant!

Gelato Crib

This Scandinavian-inspired crib is so practical! I personally love its clean design and overall simplicity with its rounded posts and spindles. Made of New Zealand pine wood, it is safe and non-toxic. You can choose from various color combinations to fit your style. Overall, I’d say this crib is one of the least intrusive designs. It has a smaller overall feel to it (but is still a full-size crib). It is great for smaller spaces!

This low-profile design is also great for petite mamas. You can easily reach over the crib side to peacefully lay your baby down. It features four adjustable mattress positions so you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. As with all Babyletto cribs, this one is Greenguard Gold certified and can convert into a toddler bed, daybed, or full-sized bed.

Hudson Crib

The Hudson is one of the more popular cribs in the Babyletto collection. It keeps a low profile but has a more dynamic design. You’ll see rounded spindles matched with a solid frame and turned-out crib feet. Just like the Gelato crib, Babyletto uses solid New Zealand pine wood. And, for those of you who are very detail-oriented, you’ll appreciate this crib has hidden hardware, so you won’t see any visible screws! This crib has four mattress heights to grow with your baby as he learns to sit upright and stand.

Lolly Crib

The Babyletto Lolly crib features rounded spindles and a gently curved frame with tapered feet. Like the other Babyletto cribs, it is made of solid New Zealand pine wood and has a variety of color options to fit your baby’s nursery style.

Again, this crib has a nice low-profile design and features four adjustable mattress positions so you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. As with all Babyletto cribs, this one is Greenguard Gold certified and can convert into a toddler bed, daybed, or full-sized bed.

Modo Crib

This has a robust, sturdy look with large square feet, rectangular spindles, and a sturdy frame. It can certainly handle your jumping toddler! Made of solid New Zealand pine wood, this style has a variety of color options to fit your style.

It features four adjustable mattress positions and is Greenguard Gold certified.

Bondi Crib

The Babyletto Bondi Convertible Crib offers a beautiful boho-inspired design along with practical functionality. Crafted from sustainably sourced solid New Zealand pine wood, it features playfully arched side panels, curved feet, and woven plant-based cane, creating a warm and inviting aesthetic. The crib’s hidden hardware construction ensures a polished, clean look by eliminating visible screws on the furniture exterior.

Designed to grow with your child, the Bondi Cane Crib easily transitions from a crib to a toddler bed and then to a daybed, with the toddler bed conversion kit included for added convenience. It accommodates babies from newborn on up to approximately 4 years old. The crib also features four adjustable mattress positions to adapt to your baby’s developmental stages.

Cribs by Bloom Baby

Founded by four dads, Bloom cribs are truly wonderful. They use sustainable woods with low VOC finishes, and all products are CPSC and ASTM-compliant and free of lead, BPA, phthalates, PVC, formaldehyde, and MDF. They’re actually very big on sustainability. All of their wooden cribs originate from ethically produced fast-growing sustainable forests (Baltic birch wood and beech wood). They have manufacturing facilities in Estonia, Latvia, and Vietnam with very high standards for quality safety, and the environment.

Alma Mini Crib

If you are tight on space or want to opt-out of a bassinet, the mini crib is a great solution. This is a solid wood portable mini crib. It can fold up for easy storage and is suitable for infants 12 months and under. Because it’s a mini crib, it does require a smaller mattress. Luckily, this one comes with a mattress, so you’ll be all set! Many parents rave about this because a bassinet only lasts for a few months! However, a mini crib will last the entire first year. You can easily put it next to your bed at night to monitor your baby and feed him as you need to.

Alma Grow Crib

This is Bloom’s newest crib and is very similar to the Alma Mini. However, this portable crib has a bit extra room for growth. You can actually use this crib from infancy through age 2, and it has two adjustable mattress heights to use as your little one grows. You can convert this crib into a full-size Alma Papa crib and a toddler bed (kits sold separately). You’ll definitely get a lot of use out of this one! And yes, it also has a small crib mattress that fits perfectly!

Alma Papa Crib

This is a folding crib and is great for smaller spaces. This crib has a smaller footprint than your regular full-size crib, but it’s larger than the mini cribs and can be used through age 4. You can also purchase a separate conversion rail to use this crib as a toddler bed. The crib comes with a mattress as well for a perfect fit!

Alma Max Standard Crib

This full-size crib maintains the same minimalist design as you see with their smaller mini cribs. However, this one will fit your standard crib mattress and work from infancy through age 5. If you have a small space you’ll love that even though this is a standard-sized crib, this can actually fold up! Kind of genius!

Ikea

Ikea offers a lot of budget-friendly furnishings. However, not all are solid wood and many do have particleboard or MDF. That said, Ikea is very transparent with its materials, the sources of those materials, and information on how to safely secure furnishings for safety. They also have a wonderful crib that is solid wood!

Sniglar Crib

Ikea’s Sniglar crib is a great budget option. It’s made of solid beech wood and can be converted into a toddler bed. As with all Ikea furnishings, the crib is made to European safety standards. The crib features rounded spindles around the entire crib for optimal air circulation and comfort. Note this crib is lighter weight, so you will want to anchor it to the wall using Ikea’s directions.

Room and Board

Many Room and Board products are manufactured in the United States, have a nice modern design, and are made of solid wood without toxic finishes. You will definitely appreciate the quality construction and designs that will last a lifetime.

Aster Crib

The Aster crib is hand-crafted from solid maple wood, harvested by a family-owned company in the United States. The crib exceeds all safety standards and has a sleek modern and simple design. With rounded spindles around the crib, your baby will have optimal airflow for a comfortable sleep. The crib comes in a variety of colors and finishes. And you’ll be happy to know that their non-toxic finish is Greenguard Gold certified for low chemical emissions and is very easy to clean!

Nest Crib

The Nest crib features solid walnut wood construction with a variety of non-toxic finish options. It has a classic design with smooth, flat spindles around the crib and two raised ends for elevated symmetry. It’s a traditional feel that will fit any nursery decor! For longer use, you can also convert this bed to a toddler bed when your little one is ready. Note that all finish options are Grenguard Gold certified for low chemical emissions and free of lead, phthalates, and formaldehyde.

Nestig

Nestig offers a variety of well-made, natural nursery furnishings. Most of their furnishings and decor are crafted in Brazil by local artisans, and they design everything with safety and sustainability in mind with great attention to the details. All of their cribs Nestig cribs are made with sustainably harvested wood and non-toxic finishings.

The Wave Crib

The Wave crib is a truly innovative and modern design. Made of sustainably harvested solid Brazilian pine and a mattress support system from eco-engineered wood, the shape feels very natural. In fact, as the name of the crib indicates, this particular design was inspired by the movement of the ocean. Sounds pretty calming to me! You’ll also love that this crib will last through all the stages! It converts from a mini crib to a full crib to a toddler bed. It has lockable wheels for easy transport around a room or area of your home, too.

With the purchase of this crib, you will also receive a mini crib mattress and a conversion kit to transform the mini crib into a full-size crib and toddler bed. The crib includes a 60-day free trial and an 18-year limited warranty. Love companies that stand behind their products!

The Cloud Crib

The Cloud Crib feels as light and airy as it sounds! This is a 3-in-1 convertible crib that grows with your baby from a mini crib to a full-size crib to a toddler bed. It has a modern feel with wood-tone accents at the base and top frame and white rounded spindles. The base and rails are constructed from sustainably harvested Brazilian pine, the spindles are made of stainless steel, and the mattress support is made of eco-engineered wood. It’s completely non-toxic from water-based glue (no VOCs) and has a non-toxic clear coat finish.

Included with this purchase, you will receive a mini mattress and a conversion kit for the full-size crib and toddler bed. Note you do need to purchase a separate conventional-size crib mattress for the full-size crib.

Pottery Barn Kids

Pottery Barn Kids sells a number of Greenguard Gold-certified cribs, and a few of them are made of solid wood and very sturdy. Many of the cribs are manufactured in Asia. That said, PBK generally has excellent customer service. They are also always adding new products, so be sure to check out the full collection of Greenguard certified cribs at PBK.

Kendall Convertible Crib

The Kendall crib is built for stability and longevity. You’ll love the craftsman style that really will match any nursery aesthetic. Made of solid poplar wood and a metal mattress platform, it has three height adjustments for every stage of infancy and toddlerhood. The versatile design lets you convert the crib to a toddler bed when the time is right! This is also Greenguard Gold certified for clean indoor air.

Kendall Low-Profile Convertible Crib

Perfect for petite parents! This version of the Kendall crib features the same structure and style as the other Kendall crib, but is simply shorter by about four inches. I definitely recommend trying this one out if you’re under 5’4″. No standing on tippy toes to get your little one in and out of his crib.

Kendall 4-in-1 Convertible Crib

Just when you thought there wasn’t yet another option for the Kendall crib! Here is another! This Kendall crib can be converted into a full-size bed in addition to the toddler bed. You’ll see that one side of the crib is slightly taller than the other side, which has a beautiful presentation in a nursery and can eventually become a headboard for a full-size bed. Its simple and timeless design will prove versatile and durable over the years. I promise it’s a keeper!

Emerson Convertible Crib

The Emerson Crib has a sleek, elegant look to it that remains simple and classic. It’s crafted of solid pine wood and has a metal mattress platform with two height adjustments. The wood is kiln-dried, which is a process that keeps the wood firm and prevents splitting, warping, and cracking. The finish features non-toxic, water-based paint. Just like the Kendall crib, the Emerson is Greenguard Gold certified for clean indoor air.

Camden Convertible Crib

The Camden crib features congruent clean lines adding a nice modern touch to any nursery. Made of solid New Zealand pine, the crib is built to last. The mattress platform is made of metal and has two adjustable heights for your growing baby, and when he’s ready, the crib can be converted to a toddler bed. This one is also Greenguard Gold certified for clean indoor air.

Dawson Convertible Crib

The Dawson crib has a mid-century feel but keeps a classic style. Made of solid eucalyptus wood with a non-toxic water-based finish, you can feel good about this crib. It’s durable, safe, and built to last. The versatile design has 3 mattress heights for your growing baby and can be converted to a toddler bed once your child is ready.

One of my favorites, the Serena has an elegant classic look. The arched headboard offers a sleek look that matures as the crib changes into a toddler bed and later a full-size bed. Made of solid beech wood construction, this crib is finished with organic, non-toxic paints and stain options.

Again, this crib is completely non-toxic and has no VOCs, formaldehyde, or lead. You also won’t find any sharp corners or exposed hardware.

You’ll love the elegant curves in the Kalani design. It’s one of Davinci’s most popular cribs! It’s very sturdy and constructed of solid New Zealand pine wood and has a non-toxic finish. As with all of Davinci’s cribs, this one is also Greenguard Gold certified for cleaner indoor air. You’ll also appreciate that this crib can convert into a toddler bed, daybed, and full-size bed (conversion kits sold separately), so it will last you a very long time!

The Grove crib features a sturdy construction made of New Zealand pine wood and is finished with non-toxic paint. This crib has a few non-toxic finish options for you to choose from and features a strong, powder-coated metal platform for optimal crib mattress support. You can adjust the mattress heights for all stages of your baby’s development, and you can convert this crib into a toddler bed, daybed, or full-sized bed. Handmade in Indiana.

Happy Crib Shopping!

I hope that this guide to non-toxic cribs is helpful for you! Remember that your baby will spend a very large portion of their time (awake and asleep) in their crib, which makes it that much more important to opt for non-toxic, safe cribs that won’t off-gas VOCs or be painted with toxic chemical finishes that aren’t great for your baby’s health. Luckily, there are many healthy options to choose from!

Enjoy the shopping process! I am sure you’ll find the right one for your baby!

What non-toxic crib did you choose for your baby? I’d love to know!
