Mamas, it’s the 25th Annual World Breastfeeding Week!
From August 1st – 7th, 2017, we are recognizing, honoring, and normalizing breastfeeding. We’re focusing on the importance of breastfeeding, and the importance of supporting moms who breastfeed. We need to encourage and support breastfeeding.Click To Tweet
Why celebrate World Breastfeeding Week? Because breastfeeding matters! I feel very blessed that I had an abundant milk supply and the endurance to nurse both my babies. Even when I found out that my first baby had a pretty bad case of reflux and food allergies, I continued nursing even though it meant I had to eliminate several allergenic and acidic foods from my diet: dairy, soy, citrus, nuts, corn, wheat, and eggs. It wasn’t easy but I knew that breastfeeding was better for my son, even though I had to go on a severe elimination diet for several months. I planned to nurse him for one year. One year came and went, and we continued nursing until just after he turned 2. I’m really proud of this achievement!
I also wanted to partake in World Breastfeeding Week because we as nursing moms need support. We need encouragement from our spouses, our families, our friends, and from strangers. We like to know that our efforts to nurse are respected and appreciated. That society and our friends and family recognize that it is healthy and normal. We need support when it gets hard (and it does) and we need support whether we decide to stop nursing after 6 months or 26 months. Moms need support – period – but nursing moms also need support in their efforts to nurse.
Because if we keep supporting and upholding breastfeeding as the healthiest way to feed our babies, our children and our children’s children will benefit. Breastfeeding is powerful and impactful in the lives of our children. Breast milk contains the right amount of protein, sugar, fat and most vitamins to help babies develop, and its makeup changes to meet their needs as they grow. Breast milk has antibodies that help protect babies from many illnesses. Breast milk is amazing!
